Like Mother, Like Daughter
Like Mother, Like Daughter
This thread will follow character development of Alice Norwood, the daughter of a cop, trying to make something of herself on and off the badge. The story is still a work in progress.
Alice Norwood was born into a family that didn't quite fit the mold. Her parents, Emily & Michael, tried but didn't manage to follow the path to a fairy tale romance. Having a healthy, but at times troubled relationship, it ended in a mutual breakup. It was years later that they decided to give it another shot. This time around, though, the spark that once held them together is gone. This time around, they had built a relationship based on respect and understanding that life can be messy and unpredictable. They weren't lovers anymore, but that didn't stop them from coming back to one another to pursue a shared dream of building a life together, as a family.
Growing up, Alice was aware of the delicate and unusual balance her parents maintained. Both of them worked hard to provide a stable home for her, and Alice learned early in life that it's not about perfection, but rather about the effort we put into ourselves, others, and the world. Her childhood was like any other, she went to school, made friends, and spent her weekends running around with neighborhood kids. Aside from the unusual family situation, her childhood and adulthood were pretty average and normal.
Emily, a dedicated cop, worked a job that kept her busy at times. Michael was a blue collar worker, a skilled carpenter, and was often busy with his projects, whether it was building things for work or for their home. Despite packed schedules and the challenges that building a family from the bottom up entailed, Alice was loved unconditionally, and that love was the backbone of her life. She had much to learn from both of her parents, as did they, navigating life together once again. Growing up, Alice looked up to both of her parents, with Emily and Michael filling the shoes of role models better than anyone else ever could.
Alice has her mother's eyes, her kindness and compassion; her dad's hardworking mindset and no-nonsense attitude; and a mutual head-strong approach and resilience to challenges life has up its sleeve. Alice's close ones would describe her as an easy going but a little weird and, at times, aloof woman, though generally good-natured.
Having been around a cop her entire life, she grew fondness and respect for the profession, as well as interest in it as she grew into her late teens. She'd heard Emily's stories: some were good, some bad; some happy, some tragic and devastating. Whether it was something within the department or in the field, Emily has seen it all through the years. She learned that not all is black and white, and that policemen often live in the grey. It was time for her to pass this on. From a veteran, to an up-and-coming rookie.
Alice was never very ambitious, deciding to call quits on education once she graduated high school. After graduation, the only door that seemed wide open was being on the force. She had a mentor to back her up, and it was one of the only jobs that gave her seventy grand a year and an early pension for her education level. Trying to make it in this job comes with its own challenges, however one more was going to loom over Alice's head should she make it through the academy: she wanted to make a name for herself rather than being in the shadow of her mother, always being known as "Emily's kid" and so on, which was inevitable in the beginning. She wanted to be seen and respected as an individual, and she knew it wouldn't come easy. Taking after Emily, she wouldn't let something like this get in her way of being the best she can be.
Alice is on her own path by this point. Can this young woman keep up with the pace of her job all while trying to find her place in life outside work?
